Did You Know?

Lake Victoria

Did you know that Lake Victoria, the second largest fresh water lake in the world, was not discovered by Europeans until 1858? Although Arab explorers and traders knew of this lake in the early 12th century, it did not show up on European maps until the late 19th century.

The map at left, a 1912 map of Central Africa, clearly shows the large body of water called Lake Victoria. Visit our map gallery to learn more about this and other interesting maps. Click for a larger viewof this map.
